The Difference Between Vinyl and Leather

Did you know the differences between vinyl and leather? Sometimes it can be very subtle, as vinyl can be made to look like leather!

One of the most fundamental differences is that leather is skin, and will always be a form of animal skin. Like our skin, it needs moisture or it will shrink and wrinkle. Vinyl (sometimes called "pleather" too) also needs moisture, but it's a plastic product.

Leather will always have a distinct back to it where you can see the other side of the skin. Vinyl almost always has a cloth backing.

Here are some other key differences between leather and vinyl:

  • Source: Leather is made from animal skins, while vinyl is a synthetic material made from resin or plastic.

  • Feel: Leather feels soft, supple, and warm to the touch, while vinyl feels smooth, cold, and plasticky.

  • Durability: Leather is more durable than vinyl and will last longer with proper care.

  • Aesthetics: Leather has a natural, organic look and feel, while vinyl can be made to look like leather, but it will never be as authentic.

  • Scent: Leather has a distinctive scent, while vinyl does not have any odor.

  • Price: Leather is typically more expensive than vinyl.

Here are some additional ways to tell the difference between leather and vinyl:

  • Look for natural markings: Leather will have natural markings from the animal, such as scars, wrinkles, and pores. Vinyl will not have these markings.

  • Try to stretch it: Leather will be slightly stretchy, while vinyl will not stretch at all.

  • Burn it: If you light a match or lighter to the material, leather will have a smoky smell and will char slightly. Vinyl will melt and give off a strong chemical odor.

Ultimately, the best way to choose between leather and vinyl is to consider your needs and budget. If you want a durable, high-quality material that will last for years, then leather is the better choice. If you're looking for a less expensive material that is easy to care for, then vinyl may be a better option.
